Rest Super — Making super simple

Rest, one of Australia's largest retail industry super funds, primarily serves young retail workers as their first fund. The main challenge has always been retention, keeping members with Rest as they change jobs and move through their careers. Rest had already launched a mobile app to help address this, and I joined the project to extend it, bringing UX, technical, and design system expertise to what it could do next.

The Brief

There was room to make the design and development process more consistent as the product grew, and room to do more for members directly. Super is something people often don't engage with until it matters, and there was an opportunity to make that information easier to actually understand within the app.

The Approach

Through UX product development workshops, we shaped the project's objectives and tested our assumptions against real user insight. My key contribution was building a comprehensive design system for the app, a component library covering buttons, cards, and form inputs, a typography and colour token system, and an icon and illustration style I extended as needed, with accessibility built into the components from the start.

I also worked on new features aimed at helping members understand their super, turning complex financial information into something easier to take in at a glance.

The Outcome

Since launch, Rest has seen more members staying through job and career changes, directly addressing the retention problem the app was built to solve. The app has also held strong ratings, 4.6 on the iOS App Store and 4.8 on Android, reflecting how well it's landed with the people using it day to day.
